Although I enjoyed the story as far as it went, I was left wanting a little more substance. Readers that have been with the Hannah Swensen series from the beginning will likely not have that complaint.

Used to be you could count on the information you picked up, say in a bar, or listening to other people’s conversations at work, or on the bus or subway. Frankly, I think someone who’s been drinking all day in a bar is as likely to tell you the truth as anyone — although … could be not everyone agrees with that assessment. So, for argument’s sake, let’s say there could be better sources for important data.
For instance, the guy in the pub might have seemed to say something about a catastrophe at the mall, but with all the slurring it sounds a bit like “they have cats for free down the hall.” So you’re left in a quandary — do you worry about the devastation that might have occurred or do you go pick out a new pet?
The more sensible among us probably turn to the newspaper or television news programs to get the truth. Well, okay, I guess if you want to think of it that way -

Truth, Justice, the Internet Way
So where can we turn for truth. The Internet, of course! Certainly, there could be no false information lurking on the medium of the masses.
“Congress caught making false entries in Wikipedia.” C|Net News.com article.
Well, okay. A few tiny little falsehoods may have crept in over time. but there’s a Web site dedicated to debunking Internet and email myths — Snopes.com. Surely they have exposed any and all lies that might be floating about.
Of course, what if Snopes is lying? That would mean Nigerians really are giving away free money for helping them move large sums to American banks, and Bill Gates will send me money just for forwarding an email to everyone in my address book, and the moon landing really was filmed on a soundstage. Oh, my.
I thought I was going somewhere with all this. I guess I’m now thinking someone is going to read what I’ve written here and actually believe it. then someday, someone will come along and prove that I was completely and utterly wrong — not a drop of truth — and then I’ll have to write about how I’m no longer a reliable source of information.
(Here comes the sappy part.) I guess all I can tell you is that the truth lies within each of us. Relying on anyone or any medium to tell you what is true will inevitably lead to disillusionment. Don’t let anyone tell you what to believe; find out for yourself.
I’m not saying you shouldn’t trust people. After all, the guy who’s been drinking in a pub all day may really know what he’s talking about — free cats for everyone!

How many times do you change clothes in the course of a day? two? three? Four? I tried this on myself recently. upon waking up, I slip on my robe and flannel sleep pants – that’s one. After a morning shower I put on whatever clothes will be appropriate for the day, whether it’s going out for meetings or staying in front of the computer all day – that’s two. As the day winds down I may shift into “yard work” mode, or go for a walk or do some form of exercise, requiring another change – that’s three.
Then before dinner, another quick change into something comfortable for the evening, usually involving sweat pants and a pull over – that’s four. Throw in a night out for dinner and you get one more change – that’s five! Changing clothes five times in the course of one day may, on the surface, seem a bit excessive – but the truth is, each set of attire serves a specific and distinct purpose. you wouldn’t wear your robe and flannels to a business meeting; and your business meeting outfit might not be the top choice for lounging around the house in the evening.
An electric guitar is much the same. it has the ability to “change clothes” by use of a selector switch. and like the above example, each change – or setting – can serve a specific and distinct tonal purpose.
In order to understand the tonal choices available with a pickup selector switch on an electric guitar, it is first necessary to understand how the switch works and why.
The pickup selector switch is connected to the guitar pickups, and gives the guitar player the ability to choose various combinations of pickups at any given time. Each combination of pickups produces a different tone that the guitarist may want to use for the particular song they are playing.
Although there are many numerous types of selector pickup selector switches on a wide variety of electric guitars, a good understanding of the subject can be gained by taking a closer look at two of the most common guitar models on the market. These are the Gibson Les Paul and the Fender Stratocaster. Each of these two legendary guitar models has its own legion of loyal supporters who espouse the merits of one over the other many guitarists see the tonal importance of each and insist on having both available for any situation. . In addition, there are countless guitar manufacturers that produce guitars that emulate one or another of these two famous models.
The differences between the Strat and the Les Paul are many, and literally the topic for another discussion, so let’s just take a look at the differences in pickup selector switches between the two.
The standard “Les Paul” type guitar typically is built with a two “humbucker” pickups configuration. In this setup there is a “neck” pickup, and a “bridge” pickup. A neck pickup is, as the name implies, the pickup that is located closest to the neck or fret board of the guitar. The neck pickup produces a “darker” of “full bodied” tone. The bridge pickup is, also as the name implies, the pickup that is located closest to the bridge of the guitar, and produces a “brighter” or “thinner” tone. The selector switch on a Les Paul style guitar is normally a three position or “three way” switch. The three combinations of pickup selections available with the three way switch are as follows:
Position 1 – Activates only the neck pickup Position 2 – Activates only the bridge pickup Position 3 – this middle switch position activates a combination of the two pickups
The standard “Strat” style guitar is typically built with a three “single coil” pickups configuration. In this setup there is also a neck pickup and a bridge pickup, but there is also a middle pickup as well. The selector switch on a Strat style guitar is normally a five position or “five way” switch. The combinations of pickup selections available with the five way switch are as follows:
Position 1 – The switch in the most downward position activates the bridge pickup only Position 2 – The next position activates a combination of the bridge and middle pickups Position 3 – this middle position activates only the middle pickup by itself Position 4 – this position activates a combination of the neck and middle pickups Position 5 – this position activates the neck pickup only
A neat trick on the Strat style pickup selector switch is to place the switch in the “in between” position. It’s a little tricky to find, but by wedging the switch “in between” either positions 1 and 2, or positions 4 and 5 – you can get an additional couple of “out of phase” tones. this is a technique made famous by Jimi Hendrix and, in essence, turns a five way switch into a seven way selector!
Whether playing a Les Paul style, Strat style, or one of the many other numerous models on the market – the pickup selector switch gives the guitarist the ability to, tonally, “change clothes” on the fly. Which selector position should you use? it depends. It’s really a matter of personal interpretation. Different songs call for different tones, and many times you will use different combinations of pickups within the same song. The key is to play around with all of the tones you have available and find whatever works best for you.
Some players get caught in a rut and get comfortable keeping the pickup selector in the same position all the time. Don’t let that be you. Always keep in mind the tonal “change of clothes” you have available to you at the flip of a switch, and keep your playing fresh and interesting by “slipping into something more comfortable”, or getting “all dressed up”, whenever the mood strikes!

Many women have not singled out the treatments for this disease. they have tried many different ways to help them with their condition. Natural cure for breast cancer is one of these alternative treatments.

A Disorganized Conspiracy…
America is prone to adopt ideas that are popularized by the advertising and indoctrination of Behemoths (big business, big unions, and big government) regardless of the intrinsic value of the idea itself. the idea that average Americans should be investing is a disorganized conspiracy and its premise lacks intrinsic value.
That doesn’t mean Americans are all lemmings and sheep. even those on the inside of a disorganized conspiracy, such as the one that is damaging your personal economies today, are unaware of the untruth that supports the manufactured myth. That lack of awareness gradually creates a shibboleth – an oft-repeated idea that the public as well as the purveyors come to perceive as truth just because it is so often repeated by so many.
The idea that most Americans should be investing is such a shibboleth. It is time for insurance and financial advisers to begin demonstrating the untruth of that idea. It is time for them to challenge the ethics of selling investments to their friends, neighbors, and clients.
The argument against investing begins with a clear understanding. what most Americans believe to be an investment is really a speculation, i.e., a gamble. Benjamin Graham said it best when he stated, “An investment operation is one which, upon thorough analysis, promises safety of principal and an adequate return. Operations not meeting these requirements are speculative.”
Mutual Funds and 401(k)s…
Does anyone believe that buying a mutual fund promises safety of principal? Is a sixty percent loss of value an adequate return?
Mutual funds and their counterparts inside 401(K)s and equivalent tax qualified retirement plans are inscrutable, defy analysis, and do not promise “safety of principal and an adequate return.” In other words, they are speculative; they are gambles. Their only promise is that they promise nothing at all.
Well, that’s not entirely true. It’s especially untrue for tax qualified retirement plans, which promise future taxation at a potentially much higher rate than the rate applied to the deduction taken and the taxes saved when contributions are made.
Free Money…
“Yes but…” what about the matching money from the company? Doesn’t that free money make up for the losses? It does, but only to the extent that the tax rates do not increase between now and the time you begin taking income from your retirement accounts.
If you follow the conventional wisdom and contribute the maximum to your retirement accounts, the employer portion represents a minimal amount of the total in the account. If you choose to contribute only as much as qualifies for the employer match, you will still be taxed on the entire amount. If that amount happens to be 50% of what it was last year, you’ll end up paying tax at a potentially higher rate on significantly less money.
From a different perspective, the amount of the tax deductions you receive currently constitutes a lien against your future earnings – a loan from the IRS. however, unlike the lien on a property, the contributions to a tax-qualified plan do not diminish your tax liability. Additional contributions increase it. If tax rates also increase, your are faced with the negative effect of compound interest.
More Myths…
There are a few additional myths that the Behemoths promote as part of the foundation to the shibboleth that all Americans should be investing. one of the most pernicious of these myths is the idea that a family only needs enough ready cash to cover three to six months of income or living expense.
The reason this myth was born was to free up more of your money for investing. Ready cash of three to six years of income or living expense is much more reasonable and is entirely achievable when investing is not a part of the picture.
“Yes but…” what about the rate of return? Can’t you expect a greater rate of return from investments than you can from savings?
NO! That’s Another Myth.
Recent studies demonstrate that money in safe bonds perform as well over the long term as the equity investments which are most commonly available in tax qualified retirement accounts. this is significant. Compare tax qualified investments to the participating whole life insurance, which tends to rely on the Prudent Man Rule and low risk uses of your money such as bonds.
The author just completed a study that compared the returns in a whole life policy to those of the Dow Jones Industrial Average over the past ten years. the whole life policy outperformed the DJIA by almost 130%. Moreover, the DJIA would have to average over 7.2% net of commissions, fees, term insurance costs, and losses over the next ten years to have any hope of catching up with the whole life contract.
When Is your Long Term?
A third myth, implied in the previous discussion and designed to tempt your to gamble your money, is that investing is for the long-term. however, individual investors do not produce the same results that the Behemoths have promoted and advertised to induce Americans to invest – aka, gamble – their money in the markets. the Behemoths speak only of averages. they focus your attention on the top of the mountain and fail to recognize the chasm that looms immediately ahead. (You know that’s true today more than ever.)
The Question…
The purpose of this article is to raise the question: “Is it ethical to sell investments – especially tax qualified retirement plans – to Americans that have auto loans, credit card debt, mortgages, lines of credit, and only a few months in cash reserves?”
Consider how many Americans today quickly exhausted the unrealistic three to six months emergency fund and are raiding their retirement accounts to keep up with debt payments or deal with other of life’s surprises during what is going to be a very long and painful recovery.
Consider the recent revelations about the greed for your client’s money on Dull Street (formerly Wall Street) and in the halls of government by the power hungry Dolts in DC (all 535 in Congress and the 43,000+ lobbyists that feed them).
Can we afford to be silent about the conditions that have led so many Americans to or over the brink of financial ruin?
Is it time for advisers to recommend you withdraw from tax-qualified plans and put your money into cash value life insurance where you and you alone have control?
