NEW YORK — Defending champion Kim Clijsters struggled to find her footing on a windy day before recovering in time to win her 15th straight match at the U.S. Open.
The second-seeded Belgian beat Hungary’s Greta Arn 6-0, 7-5 in the first round Monday. she fell behind 4-0 in the second set, and the 104th-ranked Arn had a chance to serve out the set at 5-4. But Clijsters got the break, then did it again to clinch the straight-set victory.
“I’m just glad to finish that second set off and not let it go three sets,” she said.
Clijsters said she had some trouble adjusting her strokes when she was playing with or against the wind. What wasn’t troubling her much was the left hip that bothered her during a tuneup tournament earlier this month.
A year ago, Clijsters was a wild-card entry in only her third tournament back after 2½ years away from the sport. now she’s one of the favorites to win the Open.
Melanie Oudin and Francesca Schiavone also know how quickly perceptions can change. Oudin struggled with higher expectations since her crowd-pleasing run to the U.S. Open quarterfinals last year. So did Schiavone after her breakthrough French Open title in June.
But neither showed any signs of the pressure in cruising to dominant first-round wins.
Oudin, the 18-year-old from Marietta, Ga., needed just 56 minutes to beat Olga Savchuk of Ukraine 6-3, 6-0. Schiavone, the Italian who won her first Grand Slam weeks before her 30th birthday, dispatched Ayumi Morita of Japan 6-1, 6-0 in 58 minutes.
If anything, Schiavone seems to be having fun in the spotlight. Asked why she’s a fan favorite, she playfully replied, “I attract them because I’m beautiful.”
Schiavone acknowledged that maybe she’s a bit more motivated at a Grand Slam than at other tournaments. she was pleased that her first-round match was in the grandstand – a year ago, she was relegated to an outer court.
“I like to do it, because adrenaline is coming up and I enjoy much more than play in faraway court,” she said with a laugh. “Maybe because I am 30 years old and now I want to enjoy with people.”
Five-time winner Roger Federer was one of four past U.S. Open champions scheduled to play in Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday, along with Andy Roddick, Venus Williams and Clijsters. another previous winner, Lleyton Hewitt, was slated to be in Louis Armstrong Stadium.
Also in action on Day 1 were former no. 1s Dinara Safina and Ana Ivanovic, as well as Sam Stosur, who lost to Schiavone in the French Open final.
The 43rd-ranked Oudin won the last nine games against Savchuk, a 143rd-ranked qualifier. Oudin’s success last year earned her the opening match in Ashe, where the sparse crowd gave her a warm ovation when she took the court a little after 11 a.m.
Oudin snapped a four-match losing streak and won for only the fifth time in her past 18 matches. A year ago, she became the darling of the tournament, upsetting Maria Sharapova and Elena Dementieva en route to becoming the youngest U.S. Open quarterfinalist since Serena Williams in 1999.
Schiavone, seeded no. 6, had been just 3-6 since winning at Roland Garros. she lost in the first round at Wimbledon and dropped her opening match at three other tournaments. Her only three victories came against opponents outside the top 65.
Schiavone had no difficulty against the 83rd-ranked Morita, facing just one break point and hitting 28 winners.
Russia’s Dementieva, the no. 12 seed, also advanced easily, beating Olga Govortsova of Belarus 6-1, 6-2.
Fellow Russian Nikolay Davydenko, the no. 6 seed on the men’s side, beat American Michael Russell 6-4, 6-1, 6-3. no. 11 Marin Cilic and no. 22 Juan Carlos Ferrero also advanced.

does anyone think that maryse is afriad of mickie james &ducking her for the wwe diva's championship?
In the storyline yes.
yes! but i know that Mickie will probably take her on soon! maybe Mickie will get the Divas Title and make history BEFORE Michelle McCool does, again!
yes maryse knows she cant beat mickie james because mickie james is miles more expierenced so she doesnt wanna lose her divas championship so she runs away everytime mickie james is around but mickie james is gonna get her.
Ya in the storyline, mickie james beat maryse twice or 3x,and she's afraid Mickie will get the diva's championship from her, that's why in the battle royale, she sparayed hairspray in her eye because she knew mickie will win and will prolly win her title.I hope they have a title match on the bash!!!
yeah i think so. i hope at the bash they have a bra and pantie match
i can see them in a match at night of champions. but maryse will probably DQ her self to keep the title.
Yes because she is told to act like that.
in reality no. in storyline yes
Who thinks that maryse is chickening out of a showdown with mickie james?

Oklahoma City Thunder
vs
Golden State Warriors
Preview
The story so far
The Warriors have spent much of the season shorthanded including the first match between these two teams. They are finally getting back to healthy although they will still probably be missing shooter Anthony Morrow and power forward Anthony Randolph. the Thunder got a much needed win over Denver at home on Friday. that win did a lot to wipe the bad taste of a four game losing streak out of Thunder fans mouths. the Thunder are back to a half game out of the 8th seed despite that losing streak. the Thunder are currently 1-1 in their home stand with winnable games tonight and against Atlanta before heading back out on the road.
The Matchups
CJ Watson v Russell Westbrook
The Warriors shot well last time they were in OKC. Watson was 3-7 for 10 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, and 3 turnovers. Westbrook did not have a good game he was 4-17 for 12 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, a steal, and 4 turnovers. Westbrook played superb against Denver his 4:1 assist to turnover ratio was a big part of the win as was his defense against JR Smith and Chauncey Billups.
Stephen Curry v Thabo Sefolosha
Sefolosha will probably bounce around between Watson, Curry, and Ellis depending on who has the hot hand. Curry is a good shooter and the Thunder will need to make sure to close out on his shot ASAP. Curry went 9-14 in the first game but was limited by foul trouble throughout the game. Sefolosha continues to work to find his place in the Thunder offense. last game against Denver they showed some new sets which opened holes for him to cut to the basket and he responded with 8 points on 6 shots. Sefolosha is going to make an impact on this game with his defense last meet he forced 9 turnovers I expect he will again tonight.
Monta Ellis v Kevin Durant
In the first game Ellis took the majority of the shots and he went 12-28 for 31 points, 3 assists, 2 rebounds, 2 steals, and 9 turnovers. 31 points on 28 shots is not good but when you add 9 turnovers you start to see why the Thunder won going away. KD also had an off game, 28 points on 24 shots is decent but considering he went 9-24 in those shots… well it’s just not what we have come to expect from our All Star. Tonight Durant will probably spend a lot of time on the court playing the 4 as the Thunder will probably go small to counter the Warriors lineup. He should be able to get into the lane and to the line a lot I am thinking 45 points tonight.
Corey Maggette v Jeff Green
Maggette got tossed against the Thunder the first game. considering the lack of depth on the Warriors and how many other players were in foul trouble it was probably the final nail in the coffin. Maggette did not get tossed without first making a huge scene the refs seemed to give him a lot of leeway because the Warriors were in such dire straights. Jeff Green has been exploding out of his slump into the player we all knew he could be. well maybe not all of us but enough of us. In the last five Green is shooting the three at a 37% clip while still rebounding at a high rate.
Andris Biedrins v Nenad Krstic
Biedrins is back from injury after missing the first game. Biedrins is not much on the offense but he is a rebounding monster. given the lack of rebounding ability in the other four positions on the floor Biedrins will be called upon to get the majority of the rebounds for the Warriors. Krstic was not a big part of the first win over Golden State but tonight matched up against more of a true center he will probably play a bigger part.
Bench v Bench
Ronnie Turiaf is expected to play this time around. the former Laker is a decent backup with some offensive game. Cartier Martin is the D league pickup who has been pretty solid. Anthony Tolliver another D league call up that gives the Warriors a little size. Vladimir Radmanovic is still recovering from an achillies tendon injury but could play, just probably won’t play well.
Collison broke out of his slump, he went 4-5 against the Nuggets and grabbed 5 rebounds. Harden was the real gem of the first game against the Warriors, he had 26 points on 13 shots and got to the line 14 times. Harden also grabbed 9 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals. This will be the first time Maynor and Ibaka get to see the Warriors. Ibaka could have a field day if he gets into the game while the Warriors are playing their small lineup. Maynor just needs to continue to be a solid backup for Westbrook.
The Prediction
The Bench will be huge in this game. the Warriors don’t have one really while the Thunder have one of the best in the league. Harden had a great game against the Warriors and I expect he will again tonight. Green has been playing much better and could be one of the keys to this game. Green is one of few power forwards that can defend guards effectively. Durant should add another game to the streak and could hit 50.

Heir apparent vs. proven veteran. American vs. Spaniard. Young vs. old.
Call it what you will, but the 97th edition of the Tour de France ultimately boils down to one race: Lance Armstrong vs. Alberto Contador.
Armstrong, 38, heads into today’s start in the Dutch city of Rotterdam as a seven-time winner who has proved that adversity is no match for discipline and willpower.
The Texan met his match last year when he and Contador rode together for the Astana team.
Contador established himself as the team’s lead rider and Armstrong was forced into a supporting role, although he finished on the podium, taking the third overall spot.Expect much of the same this year. Contador relishes the opportunity to be the lead rider.
“I prefer to make my own decisions without having to take one, three or even four riders into account,” he told Reuters earlier this season. “I like my freedom, I like having the possibility to follow my own intuition.”

The 27-year-old Contador, the 2007 and 2009 Tour de France winner, is one of only five cyclists to win the sport’s three grand tours (France, Italy and Spain). He probably would have won the 2008 race, but his team was banned for previous doping scandals, even though it had new management and new riders, including Contador.
Contador’s climbing and time-trial abilities rival those of Armstrong’s in his prime.
But all that probably fuels the competitive spirit of the sport’s most esteemed rider, who announced via Twitter that this Tour de France would be his last.
“I know that my birth certificate doesn’t lie and I don’t need to pretend that I am 25,” Armstrong said on a recent Versus program. “I know that I have a greater responsibility here than anyone else in the peloton.”
After last season, Armstrong and longtime friend and team manager Johan Bruyneel broke away from Astana and formed Team RadioShack with the intention of building a team around Armstrong. they selected riders who could help Armstrong once the mountain stages come into play.
And that is where the Tour is likely to be won before it finishes July 25 in Paris.
The 2,263-mile course provides riders with a multitude of steep and difficult climbs, where both Contador and Armstrong have excelled and won their yellow jerseys.
three gained market share among the registrants over last year. Shimano dominated the market in 2009 [72%] as the most popular component among participants with Campagnolo [7.5%] and SRAM [5%] fitting into second and third place respectively. In 2010, most participants fall within 36 – 40 age group. The majority of participants indicate they ride an average weekly distance is 61 – 90 miles. Further analysis of the data at the conclusion of the 2010 Le Tour Challenge will provide additional knowledge and consumer trends that will be invaluable to the cycling industry.

I already know that Germany will beat Argentina.
Im looking forward to Brazil vs Netherlands pls.
BOTH. Brazil vs NED because I LOVE Brazil and anticipate their games the most, and Germany vs Argentina, because that will just be exciting to watch.
Both will be VERY interesting.
Brazil vs. Netherlands!
Why? because I'm from Holland, man. Where the f*ck you from?
Frankly I want all 4 matches to be as close as possible and play to the fullest. That's the beauty we want it to be in this sport. sometimes having too much expectations even from top teams can surprise us all. I am ready for that too. After all World cup is meant for surprises and controversies.
Powerhouse clashes are going to be Thrillers and expecting them to be like that. Cant wait for them to get started.
Thrillers – Brazil-Netherlands – low scoring, skills and talents shown, expecting in PKs to be settled in favor of Brazil
Argentina-Germany – expecting in regular or extra time. hopefully high scoring match.
Argetina will beat Germany!
Brasil might have a tough time with Netherlands.
We can't anticipate the value of gameplay now. Maybe two will interesting. Maybe both will boring as most awaited Brazil v/s Portugal. so, I'll check out both games. It's football. all are unpredictable.
Brazil vs Netherlands Both Brazil and Germany will win.
Germany vs. Argentina I think is the most balanced of the matchups, and is a better representative of the Europe vs. South America rivalry. The history behind the matchup also adds some intrigue to the game.
Brazil match i know that Argentina is going to lose against Germany
Germany Argentina because it is a re match of the same quarterfinal 4 years ago, where the german's won after a 2-2 tie on penalty kicks.
Brazil vs Netherlands.
Germany and Argentina just passed by luck cause of the refs.
Sure it was only one goal for both games. but people tend to forget that the teams moral goes down and then they get an idea in there head.
If the refs had done the right thing I don't think Germany and especially Argentina would've kept on going.
I'm looking forward to both very much.
Netherlands vs. Brazil more cuz Netherlands are my favorite team and Brazil is #1 in the world so I am SOOOOO excited for this match!!!
Germany vs. Argentina will be a great game, I'm gonna root for Germany but to be honest with you I hate both those teams!!! but they are fantastic soccer teams and it will be a very interesting match.

I'm looking foward to The Netherlands stomping Brazil…..
and Argentina handing the Germans their azzes.
But I'll be rooting for Ghana to go all the way.
Netherlands-Brazil, should be a ripping good game though.
Which heavyweight clash are you looking forward to more? Brazil VS netherlands or Germany VS Argentina?

That’s the Philadelphia Union on the left side of the photo. no, they are not deviating from their blue and gold color combo, but rather, they are showing their support for the Philadelphia Flyers by wearing Flyers shirts over their kits before their match against the Chicago Fire. It’s always good to see the other Philadelphia teams openly support each other like this and even better when their ideas are original. I think it goes without say that this is a pretty original idea, especially when you consider they are playing in Chicago.
