Football: Army at Eastern Michigan preview

Published: 2:00 AM – 09/03/10

7 p.m. Saturday, Rynearson Stadium, Ypsilanti, Mich.

Where to watch

The game will be not be televised. Army is hosting a viewing party at Michie Stadium where the webstream of the game will be shown on the video screen. a live video feed can be purchased at www.emueagles.com for $5.95.

Key to the game

Army’s offense needs to start fast and make a statement that this isn’t going to be the same unit that scored only 18 touchdowns last season. it would like to have a double-digit halftime lead.

About Eastern Michigan

  • the Eagles have won one of their last 18 games and were 0-12 in Ron English’s first year last season.
  • English overhauled his coaching staff, bringing in Phil Snow, a four-year NFL assistant and a former defensive coordinator at UCLA, Arizona and Washington, to lead the defense
  • Eastern Michigan’s rush defense was the worst in the country, allowing 276.7 yards per game, last season.
  • 2.5: Number of sacks senior defensive end Josh McNary had against Eastern Michigan in last year’s season opener.

3: Number of catches last season by Army’s top returning wide receiver Austin Barr, a junior.

10: Number of points Army is favored by in Saturday’s game.

13: Number of seasons since Army has had a winning season.

121: Number of seasons Army has played football.

    Position by position

Bigger things are expected from Army sophomore quarterback Trent Steelman, who was the team’s leading rusher and started every game last season. Eastern Michigan’s Alex Gillett can beat teams with his legs (484 yards, second on the team last season) more than his arm (seven interceptions and only three touchdowns in nine games, three starts). Redshirt freshman Devontae Payne, who is 6-foot-6 and 231 pounds, will play when Eastern Michigan needs to air it out. Edge: Army.

The addition of sophomore Jared Hassin makes Army’s offense a true option. Senior slotback Pat Mealy is a 1,000-yard career rusher. he should be fresher with the emergence of sophomores Malcolm Brown and Brian Cobbs. Eastern Michigan is hoping for more out of senior Dwayne Priest, who rushed for 633 yards and seven touchdowns last season, in its one-back set. Edge: Army

Junior Davyd Brooks and sophomore George Jordan make Army as athletic as it’s been at the position in years. But they will both be making their first career starts. Tight end Ben Thayer, a former quarterback, is Eastern Michigan’s top returning receiver (29 catches, 261 yards). Senior receiver Trey Hunter’s only touchdown catch of 2009 came against Army in the season opener last season. Edge: Eastern Michigan

Army returns four of its starters on the offensive line, including right tackle Jason Johnson, who will start his 29th game. Eastern Michigan senior Dan DeMaster moved to right tackle after starting all 12 games at left tackle last season. Junior left tackle Bridger Buche returns after missing 2009 with a hip injury. Edge: Army

Army senior defensive end Josh McNary tied for fifth in the nation with 12.5 sacks last season. Senior nose guard Mike Gann creates constant havoc in the backfield. Defensive ends Brad Ohrman and Javon Reese and defensive tackle Brandon Slater are returning starters for Eastern Michigan. Reese, who had nine tackles for a loss, may be the best. Edge: Army.

Senior middle linebacker Stephen Anderson, a three-year starter, anchors Army’s defense. Junior Steve Erzinger started all 12 games in 2009 and made 71 tackles. Sophomore outside linebacker Nate Combs makes his first college start in place of junior Andrew Rodriguez, Army’s leading tackler last season. Eastern Michigan senior Tim Fort, who started seven games last season, may act as a fifth defensive lineman. Edge: Army

Senior Richard King, a nickelback two years ago, and sophomore Josh Jackson, who may play in front of two-year starter Antuan Aaron, who has been battling a leg injury, could be making their first career starts for Army. Senior free safety Donovan Travis is an experienced playmaker. Junior safety Martavius Cardwell, Eastern Michigan’s top returning tackler, has been slowed by injuries in the preseason but should see some action. the Eagles should get a lift from senior free safety Latarrius Thomas, a Louisville transfer. Edge: Even

Alex Carlton tied an academy record with 18 field goals last season. Army senior punter Jonathan Bulls has looked more consistent in the preseason than he did last season. Jay Karutz, a freshman from Australia, is Eastern Michigan’s punter. Sophomore Sean Graham will see his first action as a kicker. Edge: Army

    • Jared Hassin, Army fullback: If Hassin is as good as advertised, Army’s offense should be much improved. Hassin, a transfer from Air Force, is a 235-pound sophomore, with a slotback’s athleticism.• Jarrett Mackey, Army bandit: Mackey, a sophomore, is the heir apparent to senior defensive end Josh McNary. he makes his first college start in the all-important bandit position, a combination defensive lineman and linebacker. • Davontae Payne, Eastern Michigan quarterback: Eastern Michigan will likely play Payne and Alex Gillett under center. Coach Ron English compared Payne’s arm to Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett. • Dwayne Priest, Eastern Michigan running back: Eastern Michigan needs a 100-yard game out of Priest to take the pressure off its quarterbacks. Priest rushed for 83 yards against Army last season.

Gonzaga deserves a 5 seed to play in Spokane in the NCAA tourney?

I think they do because they are the #18 team in the country, they have beaten some great teams (Memphis, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, etc..) they only have 6 losses (great record of 26-6.
Yes, they lost to St Marys in the finals of WCC but they still are the WCC regular season champs. And they are the best team in the west!! they deserve a 5 seed!

They cannot play in Spokane as they are playing the games on the Bulldogs' home court, which is not allowed in the NCAA tourney. they are probably going to San Jose.

    No they don't.

Is Percy harvin the steal of the draft so far?

He seems like a star already! I think he'll be a big star and rival adrian Peterson for big plays during the season.

Captain Munnerlyn is. It's not hard for a team to overlook a rookie especially at the start so after only 3 weeks stats really aren't that important. Also Harvin was a first round pick so he should be doing good. Munnerlyn is the best steal because he was taken in the 7th round and is starting. No other player taken in even the 6th round is even starting and a lot of most 1st round picks are.

Yep, he's doing great. My best friend is an OU fan and a Niners fan but he doesn't follow football like we do. we watched the game Sunday when Harvin ran it back for a TD and I said "See that guy that ran that back?" He said "Yeah." I said "he's the guy that was instrumental in whipping the Sooners asses in the NC game last year." He said "I hate that guy." LOL!

Harvin's 3 TDs in 3 games is great. I agree with the other poster that Knox's 2 go-ahead TDs in the last 2 games, and being drafted in the 5th round, makes Knox a helluva steal. I'd also have to throw Ray Maualuga into the debate. He is helping the Bengals even more than his stats suggest. He has given the defense, and the whole team, a much needed injection of attitude and nastiness.

No, it's definitely Johnny Knox. The guy has two touchdowns and is top 20 in receiving in the NFC. not to mention he was a 5th rounder. Another steal was Julian Edelman of the patriots. I'm a jets fan and ill admit this. The guy put up 98 yards receiving against us while moss didn't put up even 50. The guy was taken in the 2nd round and seems to be a wes welker clone. He needs time to develop, but he should be a solid wr in the future.

He has been playing well, but he was drafted in the first round.

The steal of the draft has been Johnny Knox of the Bears who was drafted in the 5th round.

    hell no.

Rival Peterson? You must be on crack!
I think Harvin's primary job is to keep Peterson's cleats shined.

    He could be.

yes harvin thrist three games he had a touchdown in all of them

    When Will Joe Mauer Return?

Joe Mauer, the stud on the Minnesota Twins is approaching his comeback after his recent heel injury that has left him sitting out on the bench.

Before the Twins played the Orioles on Thursday the 6th of may, Mauer got out for some batting practice. he still didn’t feel ready to run on his bruised foot, but did mention he’s feeling a lot better. One week without Joe Mauer is one week too long!

Mauer will be using new shoes that have custom orthotics. these custom shoes should help him with his pain until he’s 100% better.

The manager of the Twins Ron Gardenhire does not want to rush Mauer back into the lineup. That would be a mistake as it’s a very long season. a heel injury is quite easy to re-injure, so I like Gardenshire’s slow approach.

Gardenshire plans on waiting until Joe Mauer tells them he’s completely ready to go. Since he’s not been active over the last week, he’ll need a day or two of running around before he gets out there to play. after six long games of sitting out, he’s still uncertain when he’ll be at 100% and ready to run around.

Mauer’s had a positive attitude and knows he’s only getting better. He’s the type of guy that has a hard time sitting out and is itching to get back out there – he wants to play ball.

Unfortunately for the Twins, J.J. Hardy has been out for a few games as well. with the Twins sitting in first place at 19-10, they’re only going to get better with a healthy roster!

    When Will Joe Mauer Return?

Oklahoma City Thunder vs Golden State Warriors preview 1-31-10

    Oklahoma City Thunder

    vs

    Golden State Warriors

    Preview

    The story so far

The Warriors have spent much of the season shorthanded including the first match between these two teams. They are finally getting back to healthy although they will still probably be missing shooter Anthony Morrow and power forward Anthony Randolph. the Thunder got a much needed win over Denver at home on Friday. that win did a lot to wipe the bad taste of a four game losing streak out of Thunder fans mouths. the Thunder are back to a half game out of the 8th seed despite that losing streak. the Thunder are currently 1-1 in their home stand with winnable games tonight and against Atlanta before heading back out on the road.

    The Matchups

    CJ Watson v Russell Westbrook

The Warriors shot well last time they were in OKC. Watson was 3-7 for 10 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, and 3 turnovers. Westbrook did not have a good game he was 4-17 for 12 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, a steal, and 4 turnovers. Westbrook played superb against Denver his 4:1 assist to turnover ratio was a big part of the win as was his defense against JR Smith and Chauncey Billups.

    Stephen Curry v Thabo Sefolosha

Sefolosha will probably bounce around between Watson, Curry, and Ellis depending on who has the hot hand. Curry is a good shooter and the Thunder will need to make sure to close out on his shot ASAP. Curry went 9-14 in the first game but was limited by foul trouble throughout the game. Sefolosha continues to work to find his place in the Thunder offense. last game against Denver they showed some new sets which opened holes for him to cut to the basket and he responded with 8 points on 6 shots. Sefolosha is going to make an impact on this game with his defense last meet he forced 9 turnovers I expect he will again tonight.

    Monta Ellis v Kevin Durant

In the first game Ellis took the majority of the shots and he went 12-28 for 31 points, 3 assists, 2 rebounds, 2 steals, and 9 turnovers. 31 points on 28 shots is not good but when you add 9 turnovers you start to see why the Thunder won going away. KD also had an off game, 28 points on 24 shots is decent but considering he went 9-24 in those shots… well it’s just not what we have come to expect from our All Star. Tonight Durant will probably spend a lot of time on the court playing the 4 as the Thunder will probably go small to counter the Warriors lineup. He should be able to get into the lane and to the line a lot I am thinking 45 points tonight.

    Corey Maggette v Jeff Green

Maggette got tossed against the Thunder the first game. considering the lack of depth on the Warriors and how many other players were in foul trouble it was probably the final nail in the coffin. Maggette did not get tossed without first making a huge scene the refs seemed to give him a lot of leeway because the Warriors were in such dire straights. Jeff Green has been exploding out of his slump into the player we all knew he could be. well maybe not all of us but enough of us. In the last five Green is shooting the three at a 37% clip while still rebounding at a high rate.

    Andris Biedrins v Nenad Krstic

Biedrins is back from injury after missing the first game. Biedrins is not much on the offense but he is a rebounding monster. given the lack of rebounding ability in the other four positions on the floor Biedrins will be called upon to get the majority of the rebounds for the Warriors. Krstic was not a big part of the first win over Golden State but tonight matched up against more of a true center he will probably play a bigger part.

    Bench v Bench

Ronnie Turiaf is expected to play this time around. the former Laker is a decent backup with some offensive game. Cartier Martin is the D league pickup who has been pretty solid. Anthony Tolliver another D league call up that gives the Warriors a little size. Vladimir Radmanovic is still recovering from an achillies tendon injury but could play, just probably won’t play well.

Collison broke out of his slump, he went 4-5 against the Nuggets and grabbed 5 rebounds. Harden was the real gem of the first game against the Warriors, he had 26 points on 13 shots and got to the line 14 times. Harden also grabbed 9 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals. This will be the first time Maynor and Ibaka get to see the Warriors. Ibaka could have a field day if he gets into the game while the Warriors are playing their small lineup. Maynor just needs to continue to be a solid backup for Westbrook.

    The Prediction

The Bench will be huge in this game. the Warriors don’t have one really while the Thunder have one of the best in the league. Harden had a great game against the Warriors and I expect he will again tonight. Green has been playing much better and could be one of the keys to this game. Green is one of few power forwards that can defend guards effectively. Durant should add another game to the streak and could hit 50.
