Shane Gottwals www.gottwalsbooks.com

Want to open a bookstore? Don’t want it to fail?I’ll assume both of these are affirmatives since you have come to the Bookshop Blog. in the business world, there are few ways to “ensure” (not quite the right word… you never have sureties in retail) success. the biggest way is to open a franchise, which there are no known franchises based in the U.S. (that I know of) for the used book trade. the other way is a bit simpler…

I asked a question in an article I wrote for the Bookshop Blog a few months ago, “Knowing a company’s trade policy, pricing, and sorting system (things you can figure out just by studying a store for its face value) does not guarantee that you can make it work nearly as well or nearly as quickly. this is where the sense in franchising comes. I know that someone cannot offer Gottwals Books’s value until they have our business model. they cannot understand completely what we do. hence, why not franchise?”There’s a boom in franchising, particularly since the worldwide economy has been hurting. People are much more comfortable (and they should be) taking a concept that has proven to work in the past.

Well… Gottwals Books has stepped forward to offer our concept that has taken us to 5 locations in 3 states (and still growing).

The big disadvantage to owning a franchise is that the franchisor has control over your day-to-day operations. they tell you what to do, and you cannot decide to do otherwise (or you’ll lose your franchise rights).we have decided to license the Gottwals Books business model, systems, and procedures as an all-inclusive package under the name “Walls of Books!” For a fee, you can purchase the rights to this concept along with the consulting, instruction manual, and training necessary to open your own store. While no one wants to ever pay a fee for anything, the cost is much less than a franchise fee and you keep the freedom. Also, we save you the time and expense of poor decision-making that comes from inexperience. we have access to vendors for software, equipment, and supplies. we also are working to provide incredible discounts on the shelving and other build-out materials you need to start your own used bookstore.

This is only applicable in the US, but we welcome feedback from everyone. we have already seen positive results from this endeavor, and we hope to open many new stores in the not-too-distant future.

The big advantage to something like this is that used bookstores have NOT been doing well over the past few years. As I’ve written many times before, most of this is due to the lack of proper policies and procedures, not to mention a lack of managerial skills. With the sales volume we’ve seen, there’s no doubt that our concept should appeal to anyone wanting to open their own shop. if it’s worked for us time and again, there’s little to stop the same financial success for anyone else who wants to try.

Also, consider opening a shop alone. if you are anything like us, it’ll take a couple of years to figure out how to do it properly. this is wasted time. you also hurt your chances with those first customers (if your store isn’t up to par), because many people will write you off. this happened to us… we’re still having people shocked at the transformation of our first store from the time they first came in… often years ago. they saw, they weren’t impressed, so they didn’t come back to spend their money.

If you can start out strong, you keep that repeat business. the bigger advantage is that you set yourself up to turn a profit much earlier than otherwise. any license fees should easily be restored to your bank account. we are unique because we have seen such aggressive growth over the past years… during an economic downturn.find our more at www.wallsofbooks.biz!

Nationals await rookie’s MRI results

WASHINGTON — Washington Nationals manager Jim Riggleman spoke for a franchise when asked about the latest exam to be performed on Stephen Strasburg’s valuable right arm.Strasburg

“I’m very anxious about that,” Riggleman said.

Thursday was a day of suspense at Nationals Park as the 22-year-old right-hander underwent his second MRI in less than a week. The results will be analyzed and announced on Friday, and the team is hoping they show nothing that will force the rookie phenom to sit out the rest of the season — or worse.

Strasburg was pulled from Saturday’s game at Philadelphia when he grimaced and shook his wrist after throwing a changeup. An MRI on Sunday confirmed the initial diagnosis of a strained flexor tendon in his forearm, but the test raised enough questions for the Nationals to order a more extensive MRI that uses an injection of dye into the arm.

Strasburg, the no. 1 overall pick in the 2009 draft, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday, the second time he’s been sidelined in less than a month. this latest setback come in his third start since returning from the DL because of inflammation in the back of his right shoulder.

“The thing with Stephen, he was in my office yesterday saying, ‘I could pitch tonight, I feel great,’” Riggleman said. “But you never know. Jordan Zimmermann last year felt like he could pitch through the whole situation, and it wasn’t to be.”

Zimmermann, another premier prospect, ended up having elbow ligament replacement surgery. He happened to be making his first start in the majors in more than a year Thursday night against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Another bit of happenstance: Thursday was the day the Nationals introduced Strasburg’s successor as the no. 1 overall pick, 17-year-old slugger-to-be Bryce Harper.

Strasburg is 5-3 with a 2.91 ERA and 92 strikeouts in 68 innings with the Nationals and has thrown 123 1/3 innings total in the majors and minors this season. The Nationals were hoping he would throw 160 innings this year.

what did i miss the draft

This should go under "Useless" along with the Lions franchise hopes as long as Matt Millen is around. the Isaiah Thomas of football, and he's been with the Lions longer. Sad.

Still forgetting that awful offensive line. never going to be better than 6-10 with that line.

< New Orleans fan, and I like that trade. Shaun Rodgers is great!

The team will go 6-10 unless they get an O-line.

It's Detroit and Matt Millen we're talking about, right?

KastlesRecord: 6-5Last Two Weeks: 6-5Place: 2nd in the East, one match back of New York Sportimes

If it’s July in Washington, that means Kastles Tennis.  The Kastles may be the smallest of DC’s pro sports teams, but they’re definitely one of the most fun.  Their season is delightfully fast-paced, starting just after July 4th, and running through this week, the pop-up tennis league, and the stadium over at 11th & H St NW, make for a wonderful outing. the Kastles are solid once again this year, with Venus Williams and Leander Paes returning to helm the squad in DC. Coach Murphy Jensen, who is every bit as crazy as he appears, is also back for a second season.

The Kastles started the season very strong, but have hit the skids in their last few matches, dropping matches to Boston, New York and Kansas City in the last few days. They’ve still got a shot at the playoffs, but will need some strong showing against Eastern division foes New York and Boston this week. Tuesday night former enfant térrible John McEnroe is in DC with the New York Sportimes (worst franchise name ever? check.) and then Anna Kournikova and the St. Louis Aces are here on Wednesday to finish out the home season. There’s the hopes of a second straight championship title for the Kastles, but they’ll need to come up big this week. Tickets are still available, and as much as it pains me to say this, the Kastles are Washington’s only championship pro sports team right now, so they could use a hand. Besides, Anna Kournikova on Wednesday, fellas.

‘7/18/2010 DC United vs LA Galaxy’courtesy of ‘Paul Frederiksen’

D.C. UnitedRecord: 3-11-3Last Two Weeks: 0-1-2Place: last in the East, 12 Points

Where is all the scrappy momentum I saw in this team a month ago? It must have, like I had feared, faded with the World Cup. a pair of disappointing matches against the Sounders and Galaxy sapped much of what hope remained for a successful turnaround of the team after a dismal start. Thursday night’s brutal loss on an 89th minute goal by the Sounders’ Roger Levesque was about as much of a punch to the gut as you’ll see. the nationally-televised match was a very even one, and for a while it looked like United would escape with a point, but United faltered just one minute early and Levesque put a cross from Fredy Montero in the net. while United had several opportunities to take the lead, both early and late in the match, the high-energy combination of Jaime Moreno and Andy Najar couldn’t get it past, even when it looked like Seattle might hand it to them.

Sunday, World Cup star Landon Donovan, USMNT teammate Edson Buddle and the LA Galaxy came to RFK for a match that would hopefully turn things around for United. Galaxy had been more vulnerable of late, with a streak of two losses, including one game where they gave up a pair of goals, and that was a chance for United to bring their season back into focus. It wouldn’t be enough. while Andy Najar would put a header into the back of the net from the top of the penalty box (all the more impressive when you remember Najar is the shortest guy on the pitch at 5′7″) but Edson Buddle would drop one in early, and Landon Donovan would convert a handball PK into a goal in minute 58, and that would be in for United.

United is currently just five points back of fourth place Chicago, so the playoffs aren’t unthinkable, but the rally that this team would need would be nothing short of astonishing. this week, United takes on Harrisburg at the Maryland Soccer Plex in an U.S. Open Cup tilt and Saturday they’ve got a friendly against British side Portsmouth to finish the month out. They’ll need to turn that in to some serious momentum, but if they can do that, here’s the run they could use. They face perennial rival, and fellow cellar-dweller New England the seventh of August, followed by FC Dallas (who they crushed in the U.S. Open Cup earlier this season), followed by expansion squad Philadelphia. If there was a place for United to come up with 9 points (and yes, I know I’m dream here, work with me) this would be the stretch to do it. They may have to do it without Chris Pontius, who was carted off the field at halftime on Sunday, but we’ll find out for sure this week.

‘Sometimes, the Nats are hard to watch’courtesy of ‘afagen’

NationalsRecord: 40-52Last Two Weeks: 4-5Place: last in the East, 14 games back

I know for a fact that this team is significantly better than last year. I know this. however, that might just make them more maddening as a spectator. this weekend’s series with the Marlins was a perfect example of the terrifying, frustrating, appalling inconsistency with which the Nationals go to work every day. the Nats outscored the Marlins 4-3 this weekend, but they still lost the series. I’m going to repeat that. the Nats outscored the Marlins, but lost the series. It was a weekend of shutouts in Miami, as Friday night, the Nationals would ride Stephen Strasburg’s pitching performance against Miami to a 4-0 victory, and then lose both Saturday and Sunday in 1-0 losses. a continued problem of bad behavior on the basepaths would cost the Nationals needed runners.

The hardest thing to watch with the Nationals right now is their presence on the bags. They lack a laser-like focus on the game when they’re on the bags, as if to say they weren’t expecting to be there at all. Pickoffs, poor situational awareness, and outright mistakes have been the hallmarks of the Nationals on the bags. Of course, when the middle part of your order goes 4-22 in a pair of games, and strands more runners than your average Baltimore drug gang, I don’t know what to tell you. the Nationals racked up 30 Ks in the weekend series, or just over a third of their outs. It’s not that the Marlins are a fantastic pitching squad, outside of NL ERA-leader Josh Johnson, it’s just that the Nationals’ bats are inconstant.

The Nationals take to the road this week, heading to Cincinnati for four, and Milwaukee for three. the Reds are as smokin’ hot as teams get, and will provide for a formidable foe, especially if the Nationals can’t keep their narcoleptic bats awake. Tonight’s pitching matchup exposes the talent mismatch we might get to watch: J.D. Martin (1-4) vs Johnny Cueto (8-2). Oh, and TV watchers, Rob Dibble makes a triumphant, if probably awful, return to the TV broadcast booth. Please try not to through your pint glass through your television.

Sacramento Kings Are the Most Improved Team, Thanks to Tyreke Evans

Earlier on in the decade, the Sacramento Kings were one of the most entertaining basketball teams to watch. Just about everyone wanted to play like the Kings, and their offensive style was emulated all around the league.

A core of extremely talented players had great chemistry, and everyone who followed this franchise knew that this was a special team.

Slowly, things began to change as the Kings traded star Chris Webber before losing center Vlade Divac to the Lakers via free agency.

It seemed like the Kings were on their way down, but they continued to play somewhat competitive basketball for another season or two.

Then, the team hit rock bottom in 2008-2009. Finishing the season with the worst record in the NBA, it was clear that the once mighty Kings had fallen. The team looked nothing like its old self, and something had to be done to restore the competitive state to Sacramento’s loyal fan base.

As the team fired coach Reggie Theus and brought in the experienced Paul Westphal, many applauded this move. an experienced coach would bring a veteran presence to the rest of this young team, leading them to a better state than before.

It wasn’t until the 2009 draft where everything changed. The team selected Tyreke Evans with the fourth overall pick and this would change everything.

Evans has been a game changer like no other rookie in the league right now. Averaging over 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists per game, his stats are better than any rookies and more importantly, his impact has been absolutely huge.

The Kings are suddenly hovering around the.500 mark entering the new year. Whether they make the playoffs or not this season almost doesn’t matter. More importantly, Kings fans know that basketball is back in Sacramento thanks to their new rookie phenom.

Kragthorpe: Like him or not, Jazz will miss Boozer

Carlos Boozer is off to Chicago in search of whatever it is he’s seeking, leaving a place that always wanted something more from him.

More Stockton-and-Malone qualities.

in the end, Boozer will be remembered more for missing games with injuries, for playoff failures and for too much self-interest than for everything he accomplished during six seasons with the Jazz.

This guy will be missed. or, he should be missed.

for a franchise trying to rebuild itself, hoping to re-establish something, the expectation level for Boozer never was reasonable. he became a case study of what Utahns demand of their stars.

Story continues below

a lot, obviously.

Boozer’s legacy includes two All-Star selections, one of the most significant playoff performances in Jazz history and the worst image of any great athlete ever to play in this town.

Some of that, I understand. Ask anybody: he was not an authentic Mailman reproduction. he played in fewer than three-fourths of the games, with injuries that were not always definable. he often came across as insincere, selfish and greedy, caring more about himself than the team.

I also know that while they were not as vocal as the detractors, Boozer had his backers. They recognized where the Jazz would have been without him, believing that one of the team’s best players ever should be celebrated, not castigated.

“I’m proud to say that I haven’t ever subscribed to the anti-Boozer camp’s notion that we’d be just as good a team without [Boozer],” said Jazz fan Dan Matheson of Salt Lake City.

so where does this leave the Jazz? Well, if you wanted Paul Millsap as your starting forward, you’ve got him. as many admirable qualities as Millsap possesses, I’m confident Boozer will become more valued around here when he’s gone.

the Jazz could not have kept Boozer without paying deeply into the NBA’s luxury tax. so for a variety of reasons, the breakup was inevitable. the Jazz now have holes on the roster and some — not enough — money to adequately fill them. They’re bound to get worse before they get better, new colors and all. and who knows how committed Deron Williams will remain to the Jazz, under such conditions?

the Bulls, meanwhile, have young talent and more money to spend beyond acquiring Boozer and are positioned to a force in the Eastern Conference.

Stoudemire agrees to sign with Knicks

Amare Stoudemire is interviewed inside Madison Square Garden on Monday, July 5, 2010, in New York. Stoudemire’s agent, happy Walters, said the deal is for the maximum allowed, which would be nearly $100 million over five years. (AP)

NEW YORK (AP) – Amare Stoudemire is headed to the New York Knicks, and both sides are hoping he’s not coming alone.

The Knicks said Monday they intend to sign Stoudemire to a contract later this week when the free agent moratorium period ends. Stoudemire’s agent, happy Walters, said the deal is for the maximum allowed, which would be nearly $100 million over five years.

Wearing a blue Knicks hat, Stoudemire said he looked forward to rebuilding a franchise and bringing the Knicks back to the top — maybe with a player such as LeBron James or Dwyane Wade with him.

"I feel great about being a pioneer and showing my leadership," he said at Madison Square Garden, where signs throughout the entrances showed the player pictured in a Knicks uniform and reading "Welcome, Amare Stoudemire."

The deal can’t be signed until Thursday, after the salary cap for next season has been set.

It was a desperately needed score in free agency for the Knicks, who spent two seasons clearing enough cap space to afford two top players. They met with James, Wade and Chris Bosh last week and believe they could still land one of them.

Stoudemire has already started recruiting, saying he spoke to James’ people and directly to Wade last week. and he said he won’t be affected if those players say no to New York.

"Totally comfortable, totally confident that my leadership qualities will uplift all of us to do something great this upcoming season," Stoudemire said. "so again, the Knicks are back."

The move reunites Stoudemire with Mike D’Antoni, his former coach in Phoenix. Stoudemire averaged more than 20 points in every season they were together and immediately becomes the best player D’Antoni has coached since leaving the Suns after the 2007-08 season.

"He’s a dominant offensive player for sure, in a variety of ways," D’Antoni said.

Stoudemire’s days with the Suns ended late last week when the team agreed to $48 million worth of deals with forwards Hakim Warrick and Channing Frye. the sides had discussed an extension, but the Suns looked elsewhere after they’d reached a stalemate.

Stoudemire said he understood owner Robert Sarver’s position and wasn’t disrespected by the Suns’ refusal to give him a max deal that would have paid him millions more. He said he’s always loved New York and wanted to play here since the Knicks passed on him in the 2002 draft.

He finally got to Broadway by becoming the first big player in this much-hyped free agent class to change teams. the other top players could announce their decisions later in the week, and perhaps they might take a second look at New York now that there’s another huge piece in place.

"no one wanted to make the first move and I feel confident enough to take that first step and hopefully now we can bring a few guys in to join me," Stoudemire said.

The Knicks decided they no longer needed to wait on an answer from Bosh, especially because Stoudemire showed such a commitment to New York. They even gave him the longest contract allowable without knowing if it could be insured because of Stoudemire’s injury history that includes microfracture knee surgery and a partially detached retina.

"I think to a degree the fact that Amare really wanted to come here, stepped up front, it got to the point where we had to acknowledge that and say that means something to us," Knicks president Donnie Walsh said.

Walsh said Stoudemire’s arrival didn’t necessarily mean the end for David Lee, the Knicks’ own All-Star free agent who plays the same position. Lee could also be used in a sign-and-trade, though Walsh indicated he hadn’t received any good proposals in discussions with Lee’s agent.

Stoudemire has career averages of 21.4 points and 8.9 rebounds and helped the Suns reach the Western Conference finals this season. D’Antoni called him "probably one of the best, if not the best finisher in the league" and dismissed the notion that their relationship was strained in Phoenix.

"We had no problem," D’Antoni said. "I had four great years. the reason I have a very good contract in New York is Amare doing what he did for me. so I can’t have any animosity and don’t, and he was great."

The question now is can he help land James.

They could have ended up together in February, when the Suns considered trading Stoudemire to Cleveland before the Cavaliers instead took a deal with Washington for Antawn Jamison.

Stoudemire would instantly become the best teammate James has ever had in the NBA, but James would have to leave behind his hometown team and the extra $30 million the Cavaliers could pay him for the partnership to happen now.

"Playing with LeBron would be great," Stoudemire said. "But again, I’m not sure what his decision is and where he’s leaning. if he’s leaning more toward New York, then that’s a great start for us."

For a team mired in a franchise-worst stretch of nine straight losing seasons, Stoudemire alone is a good start. the Knicks can finally trot out a superstar again in front of Spike Lee — who was on hand as Stoudemire met the media — and the rest of the home fans.

"It’s the first step," Walsh said. "It’s a big step, because it’s a big guy."
