Of course, many will argue that Mike D’Antoni’s system is the result of David Lee’s increased productivity. That is a tough argument, and frankly unfair. sure Amar’e Stoudemire’s scoring average under Coach D’Antoni was better than without him, but all other categories were relatively flat or even down slightly.
Without calling into question any of the other free agents, let’s discuss David Lee’s character. Not a blemish on his record. but it goes beyond that.

Playing all season with a bunch of aging veterans in their contract years, after getting a raw 1-year deal from the Knicks a summer ago, Lee had every right to simply focus on numbers alone (ala Al Harrington) in effort to increase his market value for free agency. but he did not. despite having to settle on that potentially foolish contract, D Lee gave his all night in and night out and deservedly made the All-Star Team, injury-replacement or not.
What’s more, when the Knicks celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the 1970 NBA Title on Knicks Legends Night, David Lee was the only Knicks player who sat center court to take it all in, while the crowd went nuts for Walt Frazier and Willis Reed. Where was the rest of the team? in the locker room resting, but clearly not focusing on the 2nd half that night’s game, as they got outscored 36-24 in an embarrassing loss to the Bucks.
And now what?
Do we ask this professional athlete to take another one for the team? “Hey David, sit idly by while we try and lure sexier names to MSG, and we’ll get in touch if all else fails. unless of course you want to play for cheap?” or does the home-grown heart of the NY Knicks get out of dodge as quickly as possible?
